Digression: I Have Lupus

Since September of last year I started not feeling well at all, which was at that time highly unusual for me. I had not been to the doctor in eight years or so. Then after a few weeks of really really not feeling good I knew something was wrong but kept being told I had a virus that would go away on its own. I was given three different antibiotics to try that failed. My symptoms were common for many Googled diseases from the common cold to more serious things..swollen glands, fever, chills, muscle aches, unexplained weight loss and extreme fatigue. A rash on my face started to appear in November and I started to experience significant hair loss which finally prompted a test for lupus. It was determined I did have lupus at the end of December. This was typically a fast diagnosis since many people have lupus for years without one, so I felt very relieved and much less like a hypochondriacal lunatic. I was given a prescription for Plaquenil by my rheumatologist in January and told that it would take about 3-4 months to kick in and some Prednisone and advised to take an aspirin a day, calcium, and vitamin D. Typically onset of lupus in women is between the ages of 20-40 so unsurprisingly I was fashionably late but still made it to the party!

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder. A wealth of info about it on this website:

And so I turned 40 this year

Big 4-0

It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to…

Needless to say I had a low-key birthday celebration with my family and a well-lit red velvet cake that my Mommy made me.  I received wonderful birthday wishes, messages, texts, beautiful cards in the mail and gifts from my friends that made my day.

And I am starting to feel a little better each day and learning the nuances of living with flare-ups, the random symptoms coming and going.

While I was painting Family Tree I was inspired by the quote below by Chad Sugg and thought about my family and their unconditional love and support and how important family truly is, always there when you need them and I personally have never needed them more than I do now.

Love the trees until their leaves fall off, then encourage them to try again next year.
